Believe it or not but peppers are species are actually a fruit native to the Americas, where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. Bell peppers (or sweet peppers) grow on the Grossum cultivar group of plants in a variety of different colours, such as red, yellow, green and orange. Paprika is a ground spice made from the dried red fruits of sweeter varieties of bell peppers. Both paprika and bell peppers come from the same Capsicum annuum family in the longum group, but the peppers used for paprika tend to be milder with a thinner flesh.
