5-HTP, short for 5-hydroxytryptophan, is a derivative of tryptophan, an amino acid that is present in high protein foods such as dairy products and meat. Whilst the Body makes its own 5-HTP from tryptophan it is also able to use the 5-HTP provided by supplements.
What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin from tryptophan. It is sold over the counter in the UK, US and Canada (usually as a dietary supplement) and is also marketed in many European countries for the indication of major depression. Several clinical trials have revealed the effectiveness of 5-HTP in the treatment of depression but due to a lack of high quality studies, further proof is required to determine its true effectiveness in depression treatment. Other studies have shown 5-HTP to be beneficial for anxiety, insomnia and binge eating.
5-HTP is generally taken by those individuals who require the come down relief from post-MDMA dysphoria. As 5-HTP is a necessary precursor for the brain to produce more serotonin, and MDMA use depletes a person's natural serotonin levels, taking 5-HTP could improve serotonin production. While this practice is common, there is no scientifically verifiable evidence to prove whether this works.
