Psyllium

What is psyllium?

Psyllium (ispaghula) is a form of fibre made from the husks of the Plantago seeds. As a natural bulk forming laxative, psyllium increases the size of your stools, promoting fullness and helping to relieve the symptoms of Constipation.

How does psyllium work?

Most psyllium Supplements are presented in the form of whole psyllium husk or as powder, and work by absorbing liquids in to the intestines. This liquid then swells, forming a bulky stool that the Body finds easier to pass.

What is psyllium used for?

Other than its aforementioned use (above) to treat constipation, psyllium may also improve blood sugar levels and lower Cholesterol.

Does psyllium cleanse the colon?

In a manner of speaking, yes! Psyllium is often referred to as the colon's 'internal scrubbing brush' for its ability to gently scrub away build ups of waste.

How long does psyllium husk take to work?

Psyllium should help to produce a bowel movement within a period of 12 - 72 hours.

Is it safe to take psyllium every day?

At the time of writing there was no substantial evidence to suggest that taking a soluble fibre rich supplement, like psyllium, would be harmful, however it's important to remember that it is still a laxative, and most laxatives should not be used for more than 7 days in a row without a doctor's advice - excessive use may cause cramps & abdominal pain for some individuals.

Can I sprinkle psyllium on food?

Yes! If you use a psyllium powder product, such as Just Natural Organic Psyllium Husk Powder 200g, then you could sprinkle psyllium onto your foods.
